Tennis commentator Alex Corretja
has backed Poland’s tennis star
Iga Swiatek to reclaim the top spot in the WTA
ranking.
The 22-year-old recently lost the
number one rank to Belarus’ Aryna Sabalenka after losing in the round of 16 of
the US Open to Latvia’s Jelena Ostapenko with a score of 3-6, 6-3, 6-1.
Corretja was recently quoted in a
report where he stated that it is only a matter of time before Swiatek will
return to the top of the ladder.
“She’s a fighter,” he said. “She is someone that, it doesn’t
really matter for her. If she’s going to be No 1 or No 2, she’s showing all the
time that she wants to improve. That she’s trying different things, that she’s
also been a little bit more open. I think she’s understanding that she’s not
playing for one or two tournaments.
"She’s playing for the next 10 years. I think it’s just great to see
that maybe she lost the No 1 but, for her, it was not a devastating situation.
"She
just played better and better and she’s going to be there for so many years and
she will come back to No 1 at some point again. This is going to be very
interesting.”
After the US Open debacle, Swiatek
has had a bit of a comeback as she went on to win the China Open after beating Liudmila
Samsonova in the final with a score of 6-2, 6-2.
