Czech Republic’s
Marketa Vondrousova has heaped praise on
Wimbledon
2023 semifinal opponent Ukraine’s
Elina Svitolina.
The duo will face off for a place in the final of the third
Grand Slam of the year on Thursday in London.
Before the big clash, Vondrousova, while talking to the media,
heaped praise on her opponent whom she called a ‘super woman’ and revealed that
both players often talk on the social media app Instagram.
“It’s incredible what she [Svitolina] did,” she said. “She
received a wild card and she’s in semis. It’s incredible. I feel like it’s such
a short time after a baby. She’s doing amazing things. Yeah, she’s a fighter
and she’s playing so good. I think for us, we can see that we also can manage
with a baby. It’s amazing.
“She also did great job in Paris. Now she’s doing these
things. Yeah, I mean, for me it’s incredible she can do this with a baby, and
after such a long time also. We chat a bit on Instagram. I’m with her all the
way. She’s fighting so much for everything. Now she’s just playing amazing
tennis also. She’s a super woman, I think.”
Vondrousova booked her place in the semifinal of the
competition after defeating America’s Jessica Pegula in the quarterfinal with a
score of 6-2, 2-6, 6-4 on Tuesday.
On the other hand, Svitolina produced a big surprise as she
defeated the current world number one Iga Swiatek in the last-eight fixture
with a score of 7-5, 6-7, 6-2.
This will be the sixth time when both players will face off
in professional tennis. However, this will be their first meeting in any Grand
Slam event.
Interestingly, this will also be the first time when Vondrousova
and Svitolina will clash at the grass court. In the previous meetings, the
Ukrainian tennis star is slightly ahead after having won three matches.
