Ukraine’s
Elina Svitolina has revealed what motivated her to
produced outstanding performances in the
Wimbledon 2023.
The 28-year-old has been absolutely phenomenal in the ongoing
third Grand Slam of the year in London where she has already booked her place in
the last-four after producing one of the biggest upsets by defeating the
current world number one Iga Swiatek in the quarterfinal with a score of 7-5,
6-7, 6-2 on Tuesday.
Svitolina, who entered the competition through a wildcard,
was quoted in a report by
Reuters where she stated that the ongoing war in her
country with neighbouring Russia as well as becoming a mother has changed the
way she looks at different events now.
"I say to myself I think it's less years that I have in
front than behind me," she said. "I have to go for it. I don't have
time to lose anymore. I don't know how many years I will be playing more... You
practice for these big moments. War made me stronger and also mentally
stronger. I don't take difficult situations as like a disaster.
“There are worse things in life. I'm more calm. I think
also, because I just started to play again, I have different pressures. I want
to win. I have this huge motivation to come back to the top. But I think having
a child, and war, made me a different person."
Before defeating the top-seeded player in the competition, Svitolina
came out on top against America’s Venus Williams (6-4, 6-3), Belgium’s Elise
Mertens (6-1, 1-6, 6-1), America’s Sofia Kenin (7-6, 6-2) and Russia’s Victoria
Azarenka (2-6, 6-4, 7-6) in the first, second, third and fourth round fixtures
in London.
The current world number 76 will now face Czech Republic’s Marketa
Vondrousova on Thursday for a place in the final of Wimbledon 2023.
