Bianca Andreescu injured herself during her match against Jabeur in Montreal however the Canadian was determined not to retire from the match.
It was a heartbreaking end for Bianca Andreescu at the National Bank Open in Montreal where she was the defending champion. Andreescu started off very well against Jabeur winning the first set but a lower leg injury in the 2nd set derailed her hopes with the Tunisian winning the next two.
Andreescu looked badly hurt but after a MTO continued to play the match and after it was over she explained why she continued:
"I'm sick and tired of retiring. For sure I could have [retired], but I did not want to tonight. It's super bruised. It hurt on a lot of shots. I try not to show it. She also took advantage of that."
Andreescu was plagued by injuries ever since she burst onto the tennis scene in 2019. Her best result in 2021 came at the Miami Masters where she reached the final only to retire midway through the 2nd set due to injury. Andreescu is ready to move on from Montreal despite believing she could have won it:
"I first have to realize it’s just a game of tennis. I’m only 21. Yeah, I won this tournament before. I know I could have won this tournament again. But sometimes shit happens and you basically have to move on. That’s life."
