Romania’s tennis star
Simona Halep has bizarrely kept her position
in the top 20 in the UTR Rankings despite not playing a single professional
tennis match at the highest level for more than a year.
The 32-year-old is currently serving a four-year ban after
testing positive in the dope test for a banned substance. She has already submitted
an appeal against the verdict. Despite not playing any professional tennis
match for more than 12 months, Halep has mysteriously kept her place in the top 20 of the UTR Rankings.
Halep was initially banned
for taking a banned substance after testing positive in the dope test taken during
the US Open in 2022. The ban was increased to four years after a detailed
investigation earlier in 2023.
The Constanta-born is a two-time
Grand Slam winner and also became the world number one in October 2017. Her
first major title was the French Open in 2018 when she defeated America’s Sloane
Stephens in the final with a score of 3–6, 6–4, 6–1.
A year later in 2019, Halep
went on to win her second Grand Slam title when she defeated the former world
number one and America’s legendary tennis star Serena Williams in the final in
straight sets with a score of 6-2, 6-2 to lift the Wimbledon title.
