Singapore Tennis Open Round-Up | Alexandra Eala dumped out after three-hour epic

Alexandra Eala has been dumped out of the Singapore Tennis Open in three sets by unheralded Tatiana Prozorova 4-7, 7-5, 6-3 in favour of the latter who moves onto the Quarter-Finals.

Eala has been of course one of the leading stories on the WTA Tour this season and is approaching the top 15 so in a tournament that no longer had Jessica Pegula from the outset, it was very much perhaps on her racquet alongside such players as Mirra Andreeva who will play tomorrow. But also the hammer blow of not having Amanda Anisimova either in the field was one that intrigued too.

But Eala lost in three hours in a bit of a war of attrition against Prozorova. She now goes on to face Wang Xinyu in a section of the draw that has been blown wide open after the exit of Eala who now moves on to the Asian Games.

Much chatter this week has surrounded her decision to skip the China Open out of necessity to represent her country. But she is likely to get heavily fined for doing so and also lose ranking points with the likes of the Nothing Major podcast calling out such a move as dumbest thing they've ever heard and calling on the WTA to change their course and find it in themselves to protect the player seen by many as the biggest product right now on the circuit.

But often with the glamour that now surrounds even playing her, it leads to a no fear attitude and that is certainly what Prozorova had in Singapore this afternoon.

It was not a match that settled into an epic to start with Eala losing her serve to start the opening set. She went down 3-1, but she managed to flip it round in her favour to make it 4-3 and then held for 5-3.

Eala claimed the set 6-4, but it was very much long and protracted with the Filipina having seven set points and even handing break point to her opponent on multiple occasions to potentially make it 5-5.

Set two saw Eala have chances to even head towards the finish. She went 4-2 up in the end. But she was broken emphatically at 4-4 as Prozorova gained new steam and impetus and she went 5-4 up.

It went 6-5 and a tie-break seemed likely but Prozorova managed to break for 7-5.

In the decider, Eala was down 2-0 and 4-3 and never looked like hitting back. She was broken at 5-3 and then Prozorova shut the door 6-3.
