Poland’s tennis star
Iga Swiatek has revealed the pros and
cons of being the number one player in the world.
The 22-year-old is the top-ranked women’s player in the WTA
rankings, despite a recent setback.
Talking about how it feels to reach the very top, Swiatek
stated that sometimes it becomes ‘overwhelming’ when people surround her.
"There are situations where the fact that so many
people surround me, accost me, can be overwhelming, sometimes tiring, but I
always try to remind myself that in a way I was aware that if I played tennis
well, this would happen,” she said.
“I've always wanted people to be interested in tennis, and I
appreciate that. I admit that if you play tennis well, you can get a vacation
that will make up for all the hardships and you can go to places that give you
everything you need, so there are pros and cons, but I certainly shouldn't be
the person who complains for your job.”
Swiatek is currently taking part in the Warsaw Open where she
has already booked her place in the last-eight after beating America’s Claire
Liu in straight sets with a score of 6-2, 6-2.
She will be hoping to continue her winning streak,
especially after a disappointing outing in Wimbledon 2023 where she was knocked
out from the quarterfinal stage after suffering defeat to Ukraine’s Elina Svitolina
with a score of 7-5, 6-7, 6-2.
Swiatek’s next target will be to defend her crown in New
York in the US Open. The Warsaw-born defeated Ons Jabeur in the final with a
score of 6-2, 7-6, to lift the title last year.
