Sofia Kenin has seemingly finally figured it out again as she scored another solid win over Anhelina Kalinina 6-3 6-4 to move on at the Miami Open.
The odds favoured Kalinina in this one so technically this qualifies as an upset. However, Kenin is a tremendous talent and a grand slam champion which doesn't happen by chance generally so she can win some big matches. This wasn't a match with high stakes but it was tremendously important for the former grand slam champion.
She has been working hard on a comeback after injuries nearly completely destroyed her career. It was quite shaky at times but it's looking really decent now. A straight-sets win over a tricky opponent is always good but she'll be happy with her solid serving performance as well as generally good play.
It wasn't perfect because she did drop her serve in both sets but generally Kenin was able to control the match from start to finish which is a good sign. Time will tell how far she can carry this momentum but for now, welcome back Sofia.
