As wildfires continues to spread in the city of Los Angeles, American tennis star Coco Gauff expressed her support for it's inhabitants following her opening round victory at the 2025 Australian Open.
Los Angeles firefighters have been engaged in a week-long battle against the rampant wildfires that have devastated the City of Angels, leading to at least 24 deaths and dozens of missing people. There has been some progress in slowing down the flames, but reports have emerged stating the fire threat will remain very high as dangerous winds return this week.
The 2023 US Open champion faced compatriot Sofia Kenin on Sunday in a blockbuster opening round match at the Australian Open. Gauff prevailed in a 6-3 6-3 victory, but showed she had the city of Los Angeles on her mind as she scribbled a wholesome message on the camera after her match.
“Stay strong LA, thank you firefighters,” wrote Gauff on the camera lens following her victory.
Gauff will play Britain’s Jodie Burrage in the second round. The top-ranked American will be joined in the next round of the tournament by compatriot Jessica Pegula, who defeated Australian wildcard Maya Joint 6-3 6-0 to advance at the first Grand Slam of the season.
