Greece’s tennis star
Stefanos Tsitsipas has posted a
cheerful response after his girlfriend
Paula Badosa won the
DC Open in Washington.
Both players have been dating for more than a year and are considered a power
couple.
Badosa, who was once regarded amongst the best players in
women’s tennis, finally secured her first title in 2024 in Washington when she
defeated Marie Bouzkova in the final with a score of 6-1, 4-6, 6-4. The victory
was special for numerous reasons. The New York-born star has suffered from consistent
fitness concerns in the recent past. She suffered a serious back injury which
forced her out of action for nearly 12 months. It was because of this, she
ended up missing three Grand Slams out of four in 2023.
Another reason why her triumph in New York was special was that Badosa started the campaign through a wild card but still managed to go
all the way and clinch the title. Tsitsipas, who himself is going through a
lean patch on the tennis court, posted a cheerful response after seeing his girlfriend
lift a title in Washington. “Shut the front door,” he wrote in a post on his official
account on the social media platform X—previously known as Twitter.
After the match, Badosa stated that she was extremely ‘proud’
of her efforts. “This means a lot,” she said. “Today was a very difficult day
for me because I really wanted to win this title, no matter what. It was very
emotional; I finally did it, and I am super proud of myself. What I am most
proud of myself is seeing how I handled this week, how I managed the difficult
moments, the moments of pressure. I think there were some quite tough ones,
especially in the quarterfinals and also today in the final. I am very proud of
how I dealt with them. What I have learned is that I am stronger than I
thought.”
