Carla Suárez Navarro gets her first singles win since recovering from cancer, beating #23 Ons Jabeur 6-4, 6-1 to reach the 2nd round in #Tokyo2020.
Carla Suarez Navarro finally won her first match after returning to tennis following cancer by beating Ons Jabeur 6-4 6-1 at the Olympic Games.
It was a great moment for tennis and the Olympics when Carla Suarez Navarro won the match against Jabeur. Both players have inspiring stories but Carla finally was able to do what she set out to do once she revealed the cancer diagnosis a year ago. And to do it at the Olympics is something special.
She was great from the start of the match vs Jabeur who similar to Barty simply did not have it today. Multiple unforced errors, nerves and other factors contributed to Jabeur completely melting down in this match. Jabeur hit only one ace and committed 5 double faults. She won less than 40 % of her 2nd serves and for an experienced player like Suarez Navarro, it was more than enough.
Joining the Spaniard in the next round will be a couple of Wimbledon semifinalists. Karolina Pliskova and Aryna Sabalenka kicked off their Olympics campaign with decisive victories. Pliskova defeated Cornet 6-1 6-3 while Sabalenka bested Linette 6-2 6-1.
