Iga Swiatek demonstrated top form against a very good
Maria Sakkari who was her own worst enemy yet again losing 4-6 3-6.
Sakkari was the proverbial favourite in this matchup simply because the Greek player dominated Swiatek in most of their previous matchups. The last two matches played were won by the Greek and she was looking quite good in this event as well. The start of the match certainly made Sakkari fans believe she would win this one as well.
However, Swiatek had something else in mind. After trailing 1-3, Swiatek went on a 3-0 run to battle back from the deficit and take the lead. She continued playing well eventually breaking Sakkari at 5-4 to win the opening set with 6-4. Sakkari was not terrible in this match but simply was outdueled by Swiatek in key moments.
The Polish player serving better than her opponent certainly contributed to her winning the match as the serve is an important part of both players game. Sakkari took an early 2-0 in the 2nd set as well but once again she was not able to hold it. Swiatek made it 2-2 with the Greek jumping ahead once more 3-2 but at the end that was all she would do in the match.
Confident as ever, Swiatek took control of the match and she went on a 4-0 run to win the 2nd set with 6-3 and move on to the final.
