Iga Swiatek won her opening round match at the
Rome Open today and by doing that she joined a stellar list of players that won 12 consecutive matches at the event.
The Rome Open is a longstanding event that is part of the calendar each year and it's seen quite a bit of history over the many decades it's been held. Winning streaks in general come very rarely in tennis especially ones that go beyond 10 wins however a few of those happened at the Foro Italico complex.
Chris Evert won 12 consecutive matches at the event back in the day, as did Conchita Martinez, Gabriela Sabatini, Maria Sharapova and of course Serena Williams. Iga Swiatek has now become the 6th player to do that after winning her 12th match earlier today. Interestingly enough, today's match was the 2nd she won with a double bagel in those 12.
The other was the final in 2021 when she beat Pliskova 6-0 6-0 in the final.
