Another seed is out of
Wimbledon with
Tatjana Maria overcoming
Jelena Ostapenko in a very tight 3-set match 5-7 7-5 7-5.
The German player is playing her best career Wimbledon and it's coming fairly late in her career. She revived her career this year after not playing for several years and she's in the Wimbledon quarterfinal. Maria stunned a few players already and now she did the same against Ostapenko. What makes this win especially impressive is that she was pretty much on the verge of defeat.
Maria opened well in this one taking an early 3-1 lead but that was only temporary as Ostapenko found her rhythm. The Latvian player is known for her all-attacking style and sometimes it just takes her a while to find her footing. Once she did she turned the match around getting the 7-5 win. She had 17 winners and 17 unforced errors in that one.
The attacking play continued in the 2nd set as Ostapenko jumped out to an early lead 4-1. Maria was able to wear down Ostapenko with her persistence getting a lot of balls back and the Latvian player started to miss. The more she missed the more nervous she became and eventually from being up 4-1, she dropped the 2nd set 5-7.
Ostapenko wasted two match points at 5-4 as well. The final set was a made one as Ostapenko took a 2-0 lead early. She gave it up right after that. Maria broke her at 4-4 to serve for the match at 5-4 but lost her serve to love. She broke Ostapenko once more and this time around closed out the major comeback win. 52 winners for Ostapenko but also 57 errors.
