Simona Halep did not start off well against Jessica Pegula but she rallied in time to win the match and book the final.
Halep has come to a few finals this year but always stumbled before getting there. This time around she tumbled once more but picked herself up to come back and win the match. It's left here very happy with herself despite knowing she can also do much better:
"I love playing in Canada. I think I had very good matches throughout
the week. I’m really pleased with the way I fought and every match with
the way I played. Of
course, I can improve. But I’m building the confidence, I’m building
the game, and I’m really happy that I’m in this position.”
All of that fighting spirit and competitiveness has been a signature of Halep for many years. It's back and Halep agrees after being largely missing form last year:
“The fire is back. It’s a good sign if I do that. I can say it helps me sometimes. I don’t always know if it’s good or
not. But it helps me. Yes, it doesn’t look good. But it’s a tough
subject.”
