Hubert Hurkacz was in a lot of trouble when Casper Ruud broke him at the start of the second set but the Polish player hung in there and emerged victorious.
It was a very interesting match between Ruud and Hurkacz with the Norwegian seemingly in control for the majority of it. It certainly looked that way when Ruud was up 1-0 with a 7-5 first set in hand as well. Hurkacz would keep pushing and stay in the match which proved crucial:
“I was trying to stay in the game. Casper was playing really incredible tennis and he was the better player at the beginning, especially for the first set and a half. I was trying to stay in the game and hold on to compete as good as I can.”
Hurkacz won all of his matches in three sets as well as playing the doubles event that saw him exit in the semifinals. It's a lot of tennis but Hurkacz is feeling great physically:
It’s OK. Physically I feel good. I’ve been putting a lot of work in these past weeks. So far, so good!"
Turning his attention to the final, Hurkacz admitted it will be tricky:
“The finals are always very tricky. The best players from each half are playing there, so obviously whoever I’m going to play will have a lot of momentum, a lot of confidence. It’s just going to be a super tough battle.”
