In tennis, every player's goal is to see that coveted number one seed next to their name. The race for the WTA world number one ranking is heating up in Melbourne, adding an extra layer of intrigue to an already thrilling tournament.

Heading into the Australian Open, three players had a chance to leave with the all-important top spot: Iga Swiatek, Aryna Sabalenka, and Coco Gauff. As the tournament progressed, Gauff was eliminated from contention, making it a two-horse race between Swiatek and Sabalenka.

With more than just a Grand Slam title at stake, the rest of the tournament promises high drama as the world's best battle for supremacy.

Coco Gauff will have to wait

Gauff has made a meteoric rise to the top of the tennis world, firmly establishing herself among the game's elite at just 20 years old. However, the American will have to wait a little longer before she can claim the world number one ranking, as her chances of securing the top spot have now disappeared.

Entering the Australian Open, Gauff needed to win the title, Sabalenka to lose before the semi-final, and Swiatek to exit before the third round. With Swiatek now in the quarter-finals, Gauff is officially out of the race for world number one—at least for now.

Gauff can still rise to world number two if she wins the title and Sabalenka falls short of the semi-finals. She has been in excellent form, securing a 5-7, 6-2, 6-1 victory over Belinda Bencic in a hard-fought fourth-round match.

It was a challenging start for the American as she dropped the first set to her Swiss opponent. However, she displayed resilience and determination, rallying to claim the next two sets convincingly. This victory extends Gauff’s unbeaten start to 2025 to nine matches, matching her flawless 9-0 record from last year. She is the first woman since Victoria Azarenka to achieve back-to-back 9-0 season starts and the youngest player to do so since Monica Seles.

Gauff now faces Paula Badosa in the quarter-finals in what promises to be a thrilling showdown.

Iga Swiatek looks to lead

Swiatek currently leads the WTA rankings with 8,420 points, surpassing Sabalenka, who sits at 8,086. As the Belarusian is the defending Australian Open champion, she must defend a significant number of ranking points.

Swiatek is hoping to secure her sixth Grand Slam title, which would further cement her status as the world number one. She enters the quarter-finals fresh off a dominant 6-0, 6-1 victory over Germany’s lucky loser Eva Lys.

Losing just one game was an emphatic statement, reinforcing Swiatek’s dominance as the tournament enters its decisive stages. The world number one has yet to drop a set in the tournament and has conceded only 11 games across four matches.

This is Swiatek’s second Australian Open quarter-final appearance, and she will now aim to take the next step against eighth seed Emma Navarro.

Aryna Sabalenka fights to defend her ranking

Defending the world number one ranking was always going to be a challenge for Sabalenka, as she entered the tournament with 2,000 points to defend from her Australian Open title last year.

For Sabalenka to stay in contention for the top ranking, she must at least reach the semi-finals. If Swiatek makes the semi-finals, Sabalenka must advance to the final to reclaim the top spot. Should Swiatek reach the final, Sabalenka must win the title to retain world number one status.

This scenario could lead to a dramatic final showdown, with both the Australian Open title and world number one ranking at stake.

Like Swiatek, Sabalenka delivered a commanding performance in the fourth round, defeating Mirra Andreeva 6-1, 6-2. The defending champion broke her opponent’s serve four times, recorded 15 winners against 11 unforced errors, and showcased the same power and precision that earned her the title last year.

This victory marked Sabalenka’s 18th consecutive match win at the Australian Open, equalling Victoria Azarenka’s record for the longest winning streak at the tournament in the past decade.

Sabalenka now takes on Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova as she continues her bid for back-to-back Australian Open titles.

High stakes in Melbourne

With the world’s top players in peak form and so much at stake, the final rounds of the Australian Open promise high drama and unforgettable moments. Whether Swiatek, Sabalenka, or an unexpected challenger emerges victorious, the race for the number one ranking will make this an unforgettable tournament.
