Daria Kasatkina has shed light on her experience with online abuse by sharing a screenshot of hateful comments she received despite having reached the semi-finals of the
WTA Elite Trophy.
The World No. 17 became the first semi-finalist at the prestigious tournament in Zhuhai, featuring the Top 12 players who did not qualify for the WTA Finals. In order to get there, she defeated both the top seed Barbora Krejcikova and World No. 23 Magda Linette.
The Russian has a large online following due to the vlog she maintains with her girlfriend Natalia Zabiiako. The couple posts regular updates of their life together as they travel around the world to various tournaments on the WTA Tour.
Kasatkina condemns social media trolls
However, like many tennis players, Kasatkina has also had to endure a lot of negativity online. In a post on X, formerly known as Twitter, the 26-year-old shared a screenshot of abusive messages sent to her on social media.
"I won btw. This s**t is completely out of control," she wrote.
Several fans reacted in a similar fashion, supporting the tennis star by calling out the hateful messages.
"Utterly disgusting humans. I’m sorry you have to read all these. They’re way out of line," wrote one.
"Congrats on your win! I’m sorry you and so many athletes have to go through these senseless messages. I hope you see the ones that send you love and tell you how much you matter to the world," added another.
"So sad to see you receive these awful messages. Real fans appreciate all the work you put it to compete at the highest level and support you. I hope the positive messages from fans will lift up your spirits and help you ignore the nonsense on social media," commented a third.
