Sloane Stephens enjoyed her breakthrough already in 2013. The American reached the semifinal at the Australian Open and the quarterfinal at Wimbledon in that year. For a long time, that was her maximum at the Grand Slam, until 2017.
Stephens started the tournament as an unseeded player, similarly to Jelena Ostapenko who triumphed at the Roland Garros the same year. In the first round, Sloane defeated Roberta Vinci and she outplayed Dominika Cibulkova in the second. The American also outplayed Ashleigh Barty, Julia Goerges, and Anastasija Sevastova to reach her second Grand Slam semifinal.
There, Stephens faced Venus Williams who she outplayed in three sets. In the final, Sloane met her countrywoman, Madison Keys for whom it was the first and only Grand Slam final. Stephens triumphed in 2 sets to win her one and only Grand Slam trophy. You can watch Sloane's journey to the title in the video below.
