Elina Svitolina advanced at the Chicago Women's Open with a win over Fiona Ferro 6-4 6-4 after their match got suspended yesterday.
The match between Ferro and Svitolina should have been a player yesterday but at 4-4, the match got suspended and rescheduled for today. Upon return to the courts, Svitolina was able to take advantage of Ferro who was out of rhythm and take the first set with 6-4 after winning the first two games played in the resumed match.
After that, it became a fierce battle as the players exchanged early breaks in the set. When Svitolina broke Ferro in the first game of the 2nd set it seemed like the Ukrainian would run away with the match. However, Ferro came right back to make it 1-1 after which they traded a few games.
It was a balanced match with not much separating the players who both played solid overall. Svitolina tried to break Ferro but the French player was able to withstand most of the pressure. It was only very late in the match that the Ukrainian found a breakthrough.
At 4-4, she finally found a way and broke Ferro taking a 5-4 lead which became a 6-4 2nd set victory minutes later. A good showing by Svitolina who moves on at the Chicago women's open.
