Number one seed Belinda Bencic and number two seed Elise Mertens are out of the Luxembourg Open after getting upset by Samsonova and Vondrousova.
Belinda Benci and Elise Mertens are out of the tennis event in Luxembourg as they both got beaten in the quarterfinals by Samsonova and Vondrousova. While the results are considered upsets neither is particulalry surprising considering both Bencic and Mertens played shaky in their previous matches.
Bencic took on Liudmilla Samsonova and the Swiss player never quite found her footing. Bencic although mainly consistent has stinkers from time to time where she can't hit the court. Today was one of those matches as Samsonova was able to emerge victorious without the need to play stellar tennis. The first was won with 6-1. The 2nd set was won with 6-4 as Bencic player better but it never seemed like a comeback was possible.
The 2nd match was another similar one where Vondrousva easily defeated Elise Mertens. The Belgian player struggled immensely in the previous round barely going through and Vondrousova was able to expose her shaky form today. Mertens started off well taking an early lead which she held until 3-5. She served for the set but then completely botched it by losing 4 straight games.
After losing the opening set with 5-7 Mertens completely fell apart in the 2nd set making mistake after mistake. Vondrousova kept the ball in play and waited and it paid off. She won the 2nd set with 6-2 and moved on to the semifinal.
