Unseeded pair Asia Muhammad and Taylor Townsend denied Serena Williams a double win at the ASB Classic as well as Caroline Wozniacki in Auckland.
Muhammad and Townsend defeated the favourites 6-4, 6-4; as the former extended her unbeaten record in WTA doubles finals to 5-0.
It is only a second doubles final defeat of Serena Williams' career; with the last coming at Carlsbad 1999 where Lindsay Davenport and Corina Morariu defeated both Serena and Venus Williams 6-4, 6-1.
Townsend on the otherhand has finally won a doubles title; after last year's Auckland final alongside Paige Mary Hourigan to Eugenie Bouchard and Sofia Kenin to win a maiden WTA trophy.
It could mean the final chance is gone for Wozniacki; to claim a final doubles title ahead of her final tournament in the Australian Open.
