Venus Williams losing streak continues: Has lost every singles match this year

Venus Williams preparing to hit the ball
Venus Williams has been subject to heavy questioning all year whether her wildcards have been deserved and perhaps the point has been proven again as she lost at the Guangzhou Open this morning.
She was beaten by an opponent who is 28-years younger in the form of rising Austrian star Lili Tagger in the Chinese tournament falling 2-6, 2-6.
The defeat drops Williams' record in singles matches this year to 0-13. She also has lost 16 straight matches on the WTA Tour - dating all the way back to July 2025.
Williams is a seven-time Grand Slam champion and has fallen to just above World No.600. This makes her loss to World No.53 Tagger who herself is making really efficient strides in the rankings not much of a shock.

Williams still involved in doubles

It was more of a shock in reality that Williams was even playing in China given that she had not played since the US Open and then suddenly took a last minute wildcard so either she has been sat waiting to play and hasn't received a way in or she decided suddenly to play again this year.
Williams has not won a singles match since the DC Open in 2025, when she beat Peyton Stearns 6-3, 6-4. She fell to fifth seed Magdalena Frech straight after. Her drought though in Grand Slams is much longer. She has not won since the first round of Wimbledon in 2021.
She beat Mihaela Buzarnescu 7-5, 4-6, 6-3 before losing in straight sets to Ons Jabeur. She is still in doubles action though with Janice Tjen. They saw off Ekaterine Gorgodze and Kimberly Zimmerman 6-0, 7-5. Now they take on Lyudmyla Kichenok and Makoto Ninomiya in the Quarter-Finals on Wednesday. It is in the same week also as the Pan Pacific Open.
