Although she hasn't given any hints regarding her retirement, WTA icon
Venus Williams will be making an appearance during the 2024
US Open as she's scheduled to play an exhibition mixed doubles match.
The American legend will be partnering with compatriot
Andy Roddick to take on the Argentine team of Gabriela Sabatini and
Juan Martin Del Potro. All four participants have won at least one title at Flushing Meadows, with Williams being a two-time champion (2000, 2001), Roddick winning in 2003, Sabatini prevailing in 1990 and Del Potro lifting the trophy in 2009.
Williams returning to action after six months of absence
The 44-year old has been plagued by injuries, leading to her making sporadic appearances on Tour over the past few years. Her last matches came in March, when she competed at both Indian Wells and the Miami Open. Williams lost in the first round at both events.
Despite her prolonged absence, the former World No.1 has yet to make any commitments regarding her retirement. With nothing left to prove, Williams could be fast approaching the end of her career. Although she has not announced if she'll be playing in New York this summer, she will be competing in the mixed doubles exhibition match. In what's sure to be an entertaining affair, the match is scheduled to take place during the week of US Open qualifying events.
