One of the most embarrassing moments of this #USOpen. If it’s for this… then don’t use VAR at all. Kalinskaya was in shock as we all would be.
Anna Kalinskaya through the night was defeated at the US Open in the third round by Beatriz Haddad Maia. But instead of their clash which was a highlight of the night session, it was video replay technology again in the spotlight.
Kalinskaya was left stunned and fuming as a controversial double bounce was not called at the 2024 US Open despite the use of video technology with a massive blunder by those watching the footage.
After the US hard court swing had its fair share of video replay issues including for Taylor Fritz and Jack Draper in particular, the use of VAR was welcome. However, it showed that it certainly needs some work already with this contentious call.
The Brazilian chased down a shot by Kalinskaya and appeared to have returned the ball on a double bounce. However after the point was awarded, Kalinskaya called for VAR. The World No.21 was right as it was revealed that Haddad Maia indeed failed to reach the ball.
However these calls were in vain as the umpire ruled that it was legal. Kalinskaya as expected was fuming and Haddad Maia did not paint herself in the best light by not getting involved. She chose not to concede the point despite watching the replay. The umpire upheld the call leaving Kalinskaya to lament a crucial point going the other way.
Another damning call in the debate for or against video technology. Welcomed prior to the tournaments, some will wonder why did they bother.
