World number two Belarus’
Aryna Sabalenka had a hilarious slipup
during the presentation ceremony of the
Cincinnati Open. The 26-year-old, who
is already regarded as one of the best players currently playing in women’s
tennis in the singles category, won the WTA 1000 event title in Cincinnati
after beating America’s Jessica Pegula in the final in straight sets with a
score of 6-3, 7-5.
Talking after the match, Sabalenka had a hilarious slip-up
where she thanked ‘boyfriends’ instead of ‘boyfriend’. After that, the two-time
Grand Slam winner went on to thank her team as well for doing all the hard work
behind the scenes.
"Special thank you to my boyfriends... boyfriend, I
said 'boyfriends' oh my god, that's my terrible English guys,” she said. “Thank
you to my boyfriend for keeping me happy everyday, thank you. Last but not the
least, I want to thank my team, um, yeah, you guys we've been through a lot but
we never stop working, never stop improving and I'm really to have you by my
side.”
That win was an even more special one for Sabalenka as it
pushed her back to the second spot in the WTA rankings after a long time. She replaced America’s Coco Gauff, who was knocked out of the competition after losing to Yulia Putintseva in the round of 32 with a score of 6-4, 2-6, 6-4. The
win is also important for Sabalenka as it gives her a much-needed push ahead of
the US Open. The fourth and the final Grand Slam of the year will begin from
August 26 where players from all over the world will participate to showcase
their talent and secure the ultimate prize. Last year, Sabalenka had an
impressive outing at the Flashing Meadows, where she finished as the runner-up after
losing to Gauff in the final.
