Australia’s tennis player Bernard Tomic was involved in another scandal, this time during the Challenger event. In a competition that was organised in Santo Domingo, Tomic reportedly insulted his opponent, not only on the court but in the locker room as well.
The development was confirmed by journalist Kenny Castro in a radio show, which was quoted in a report by Clay Tennis. Tomic’s behaviour changed drastically after the chair umpire's decision during the quarterfinal against Andres Andrade, where he lost in straight sets with a score of 6-2, 6-2.
The report stated that not only was Tomic hostile towards his opponent on and off the court on the day, but he also came back days later to annoy him in the final of the event. He was eventually thrown out of the court.
‘I met Andy after the match and he said ‘Tomic is crazy,” reported Castro who talked to a witness about the incident. “In the locker room he started insulting me and saying worse things than what he said on the court. After the match, Tomic began to insult him in English and told Andy ‘you’re a cheater, you’re a bad person. Now that you’re into the semi-finals you’re going to have seven thousand dollars… I have 700 thousand‘; then he warned that he was going to arrive at the next match with 30 people.”
About the incident which took place on the day of the final, press officer of the Dominican Tennis Federation was also quoted in a report. “People were taking pictures with him at the beginning, but then when things got out of control, it was something else,” he said. “Every time Dzumhur won a point, Tomic would clap his hands in a way that Andy would notice.”
Andrade went on to finish the competition as a runner up as he lost in the final of the event to Bosnia’s Damir Dzumhur in straight sets with a score of 6-4, 6-4.
