World number two
Aryna Sabalenka has mimicked America’s Danielle
Collins during their meeting in the
Madrid Open. The Belarusian tennis star registered
an impressive win as she came back from a set down to secure her place in the quarterfinal
after securing a win with a score of 4-6, 6-4, 6-3. During the ninth game of
the first set, Collins, while trying to save a break point, produced an ace and
shouted ‘come on’. On the next point, the two-time Grand Slam returned the
favour and shouted ‘come on’ mimicking the 30-year-old.
After the match, Sabalenka admitted that it was a ‘tough
battle’ but thanked the fans sitting in the arena for giving her the support
she needed throughout the competition. “It was a tough battle,” she said. “She
played unbelievable tennis. Thank you guys for staying and supporting us.
That’s why I really love Madrid. You guys are unbelievable. You make this
tournament special. Thank you so much for all the support and an incredible
atmosphere.”
Sabalenka, who had a brilliant start to the 2024 season
where she lifted the Australian Open for the second time, will now face Russia’s
young sensation Mirra Andreeva in the quarterfinal of the mega-event on
Wednesday.
