In what was an entertaining clash to start with, it suffered an unfortunate end as Anna Kalinskaya who is having the best season of her career again suffered injury problems that caused her to retire from her clash with Elena Rybakina at Wimbledon.
It is the wrist of Kalinskaya which troubled her also for a time after reaching the Dubai final which was the cause. From 1-3 down, Rybakina won the next five games and also won the first three of the second set for eight in a row as Kalinskaya decided enough is enough.
On retirement, she was clapped off the court by the crowd and also Elena Rybakina. But she didn't look up as she was in tears hidden under his visor hat and boyfriend Jannik Sinner who has been there throughout her run such has been their scheduled matches being on different days looked concerned. He looked very much pensive and worried about his girlfriend as she left the court.
But for Rybakina, it is the continuation of her run and also being favourite, she survives a tough test albeit not in a way she would've wanted.
“Definitely not the way I wanted to finish. Anna is a great player. I know she was suffering with a couple injuries. If it’s the wrist of course it’s very difficult to continue to play. I just wish her a speedy recovery," said Rybakina after the victory.
As the highest ranked player left, Rybakina also is favourite. She doesn't feel that pressure though going into the Quarter-Finals. “I don’t feel pressure. I think every opponent is difficult. I know I need to always bring my best. That’s what I’m trying to do every match. I’m just really enjoying every time I step on the court. I’m happy I’m going far in the draw. Hopefully I can go til the end.”
