World No.1 Jannik Sinner looks to be the favorite to lift the men's title at the ongoing
Roland Garros tournament. However, the Italian expressed some optimism at having French WTA player
Lois Boisson in the semifinals of the women's event, pulling up a memory of when the two practiced together.
The reigning ATP Australian Open champion made quick work of Alexander Bublik in their quarterfinal encounter, scoring a 6-1 7-5 6-0 victory over the Kazakh star. Sinner is yet to drop a set during the French Open, and has made all his opponents look ordinary by comparison.
Having Boisson in the semifinals is good for French tennis, says Sinner
The Frenchwoman made headlines after defeating American Jessica Pegula in the round of 16, with her ranking sitting at World No.361. However, Boisson would shatter even more expectations, taking out two-time WTA 1000 champion
Mirra Andreeva in the quarterfinals to reach the semifinals at her maiden Grand Slam event.
Following his victory over Bublik, Sinner was asked what he thought of Boisson's story thus far. The top seed revealed the duo had practiced together in the past, and praised the 22-year old Frenchwoman for her grit and fitness.
"We had already practiced together a long time ago," revealed Sinner. "She's a very good player, very strong physically, running a lot, hitting the ball so well. She's had surgery on her knee not so long ago, so having her in the semis is amazing for French tennis."
Boisson will face American
Coco Gauff in the semifinals, after the second seed rallied from a set down to defeat compatriot Madison Keys in the day's other quarterfinal match.
