Coco Gauff was defeated in straight sets by Jelena
Ostapenko in the fourth round of the
Australian Open and ended the press
conference in tears over her elimination.
The seventh seed was favorite in the duel with the
Latvian, but the former French Open - champion had something more to say. She
won 7-5, 6-3, and a frustrated Gauff was knocked out at Margaret Court. At the
post-match press conference, Coco breaks into tears when she was asked if she
was frustrated about the result, or also the level she showed:
“When
you play a player like her and she plays really well, it’s like, you know,
there’s nothing you can do. I feel like
today I would say nothing because every match you play a part in, but I feel
like it was rough. So it's a little bit frustrating on that part."
Then, the 18-year-old had the opportunity to talk about
the running on doubles with her partner American
Jessica Pegula, who are already in the third round:
“I’m excited to play doubles, I think it gives me a
chance to still be around and I definitely enjoy just competing in general, so I
think it will help me regardless of tomorrow just let me, I guess play with
some frustration.”, said Coco.
