Mirra Andreeva hilariously thanks herself after winning the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships title. The 17-year-old star became the youngest champion in WTA 1000 history after defeating Clara Tauson 7-6(1), 6-1.
The Russian tennis player had the best week of her career in Dubai, defeating some of the biggest names on the WTA Tour, including three Grand Slam champions: Marketa Vondrousova, Iga Swiatek, and Elena Rybakina.
Andreeva had been showing she had the level to compete with the best for some time, but lacked that final push to break into the elite. At just 17, she reached the top 10, achieving her career-highest ranking of world No. 9, following her second title.
Known for her spontaneity and showing her emotions, the Russian was visibly emotional, crying after winning the title. During the trophy ceremony, she had a funny moment after thanking her team.
"Last but not least, I’d like to thank me," she said with a smile. "I just want to thank me for always believing in me," prompting laughter from the audience.
"I wanna thank me for never quitting, I always deal with the pressure and today was not easy, but I chose to be there 100%, so I thank myself for that and I hope to see you all soon somewhere in the world."
Andreeva will travel this week to the USA for her next challenge at Indian Wells, where she will have a privileged position as the 9th seed and will aim to maintain her great week in Dubai.
