Russia’s
Mirra Andreeva wished her coach, Conchita Martinez, in an interesting manner during the ongoing
Stuttgart Open. The 17-year-old is
regarded as one for the future and has already produced some incredible
performances on the court.
Andreeva recently had an incredible run in different WTA
events where she secured 13 consecutive wins. During that time, she managed to
lift back-to-back titles in Dubai and then later in California. Both were WTA
1000 titles. She lifted the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championship after
beating Denmark’s Clara Tauson in the final in straight sets with a score of
7-6, 6-1. At the Indian Wells, she got the better of the current world number
one, Belarus’ Aryna Sabalenka, in the final with a score of 2-6, 6-4, 6-3.
Andreeva is currently taking part in the Stuttgart Open
where she cemented her spot in the next round after being awarded a walkover
against her sister Erika. After the match, the reigning world number seven wished her coach, Martinez, on the court in an interesting manner.
“Can we sing happy birthday [to Martinez,” said Andreeva
during an on-court interview. "I really wanna embarrass her a little bit!” She then went on to sing Happy birthday to her coach, and after that, admitted that she sang better than she did. "Normally I sing better than this,
guys -- believe me!” she said.
Andreeva further praised her coach and stated that she had played a big role in her success on the court. "I can say for sure
that with her it's more relaxed, even though on the court we work hard and
sometimes she's a bit too tough with me,” she said. “That I would like to
change, by the way. If she wouldn't be that tough with me, I don't think I
would play that well right now, but we have an amazing atmosphere in the team,
and I hope she'd agree."
