For some it is a worst nightmare to be serenaded on their birthday in front of a crowd and Emma Raducanu may have thought she'd get away with it during the Billie Jean King Cup Finals. But she didn't.
Raducanu did her interview on court after easing past Jule Niemeier 6-4, 6-4 which brought the first point on the board. It set Great Britain on their way to victory as Katie Boulter led from the front with a 6-1, 6-2 triumph over Laura Siegemund.
But at the end of her interview, Raducanu was serenaded mostly by British fans who had made their way out to Malaga to support the team. She said oh no to herself and had her head in her hands in embarrassment initially. But she high fived the mascot and thanked the crowd.
Raducanu turned 22 on Wednesday and started the next year of her life in style hardly showing rust after two months out with a superb win. Next stop Canada.
“I think I played some really good tennis today. Playing Jule on an indoor hard court isn’t easy. It’s a game of holding serve and trying to get a break when you can. I hadn’t played a match in a long time. So I think these small sharpness things will come with the more matches I play. I’m very proud of how I regrouped and managed to close it out in the final game," she said.
“We had a lot of support. Thanks to everyone over here. Obviously it helps a lot having so much support. The team, each and every one of us are all playing our role. We wouldn’t be here without every member. I’m very proud of myself but also of every time member playing their role as best as possible me. For sacrificing certain things.. for leading us into the finals and starting 1-0 up.”
