Top ranked player Iga Swiatek has once again called for equal prize money in tennis after the topic became a hot one recently among tennis fans.
Prize money equality has been an ongoing discussion for many years due to the glaring difference in prize money between ATP and WTA events. The issue can be boiled down to the sheer popularity of the ATP compared to the WTA which is both far less popular and far less profitable. It makes it very hard for smaller events on the WTA side to match the prize money on the ATP side because there is a possibility that many of them wouldn't turn any profit in that instance.
Swiatek talked about the topic recently admitting that tennis has done a better job than most sports but there is still work to be done:
"I think (tennis) is better than most sports, but still there is a lot we can work on in terms of, you know, getting equal prize money on some WTA tournaments compared to ATP on the same level. Grand Slams are already even, as we know. That's nice, but for sure it would be good if WTA would focus on that, but I don't really want to get into that, because it's a lot of business and sometimes politics."
She concluded:
"I don't think I have a lot of influence. I just can say that it would be nice for our sport if it was equal, especially because we kind of do the same work."
