Ons Jabeur
expressed her interest in playing doubles with
Venus Williams.
The
Tunisian is currently ranked world No. 7 and it is not very common to see her
in doubles draws. Nevertheless, Ons Jabeur seems to enjoy the challenge,
especially when having a high-level teammate, considering that her recent
doubles appearances were with Paula Badosa at the Miami Open and with Azarenka
in Cincinnati.
Last year,
it surprised everyone to see Ons Jabeur team up with
Serena Williams at the
Eastbourne Open, as Serena was making her comeback to prepare for Wimbledon.
The pair secured two victories and reached the semifinals, where they had to
withdraw due to an injury to the 23-time Grand Slam champion.
This time,
a fan asked Jabeur about the possibility of playing a doubles tournament with
Venus Williams, and the African player left the door slightly open for a future
partnership:
"@Ons_Jabeur
doubles with @Venuseswilliams when?" the fan asked.
"Whenever
she wants to," she replied with a smiling emoji.
In 2022,
the African player revealed that she had more conversations with Venus than
with Serena and believed that the older sister influenced the realization of
that doubles partnership:
"I
usually speak with Venus more than Serena. I feel like there is a 50 percent
chance that Venus had something to do with it. It was great, you would say yes
right away of course. It’s a pleasure that she chose me, it’s
unbelievable," Jabeur said.
"I
don’t know honestly why she picked me but I’m glad that she did. Maybe Venus
had something to do with it, maybe she was watching a bit of tennis and she saw
some North African girl playing good lately so maybe that kind of helped. I
hope she was watching the Madrid final as well," she added.
