World number seven
Marketa Vondrousova won the Czech Republic’s
Tennis Player of the Year Award for 2023.
The 24-year-old had a great 12 months where she won her
first Grand Slam title as well. In recognition of such success, Vondrousova ended
up winning the Czech Player of the Year award for 2023.
The Sokolov-born defeated Tunisia’s Ons Jabeur in the final at
Wimbledon in straight sets with a score of 6-4, 6-4. During her journey to the
Grand Slam final, Vondrousova defeated the likes of America’s Jessica Pegula
and Elina Svitolina as well.
Other than her Wimbledon triumph, the 2019 French Open
finalist also played in the quarterfinal of the US Open but lost to America’s Madison
Keys in straight sets with a score of 6-1, 6-4.
However, the other two Grand Slams did not go as planned as Vondrousova could not manage to qualify for the fourth round or
beyond in either event. She was knocked out of the Australian Open after
losing the third-round tie to fellow Czech Republic player Linda Fruhvirtova
with a score of 7-5, 2-6, 6-3.
In the French Open, Vondrousova's journey came to an end after
she lost the second-round tie to Russia’s Daria Kasatkina in straight sets with
a score of 6-3, 6-4.
