Despite reports coming out of the UK that Wimbledon will be reversing the ban on Russian and Belarussian players this year, an official decision has not yet been made. The Lawn Tennis Association created a big problem for tennis when it banned Russian and Belarussian players from attending its events. The biggest one is Wimbledon, arguably the biggest tournament in the world which split the community. Some applauded the sentiment while others bashed the decision as discriminatory.
The ATP and the WTA inflicted heavy fines but the ban might be returning this year. According to reports the LTA considered upholding the ban despite very clear threats from both the ATP and WTA. Sometime later it was reported that the ban would be reversed but it seems like no official decision has been made.
A spokesperson told Reuters:
"We have not yet made a decision on entries for The Championships
2023," a spokesperson for the AELTC, which organises Wimbledon told
Reuters. We are continuing to work very closely with the UK Government and key stakeholders in tennis on this matter."
