It's been quite a year for both of these tennis players who were able to better their ranking overall while also clinching spots at the final event of the year. Muguruza has had a tremendous start to the year where she looked like the best player on the planet. Injuries and other things derailed that historic campaign however the Spaniard is back to playing good tennis here.
The crucial part for Muguruza is that she is playing better as time goes by. Her best match came yesterday against Badosa and that is a good sign, especially after losing the first-round match here. For Kontaveit it was the opposite as she had a tremendous finish to her season. A somewhat historic run that included four trophies and two in the final two weeks of the season.
Her play looked superb at the start and while still impressive she wasn't as sharp yesterday against Sakkari. If the Greek proved calmer in key moments she could have easily won that match after having a break in hand in the 3rd set. Either way, this is the final and it will be very good. Both like to attack but Muguruza is fine with defending as well if need be,
She did a brilliant job against Badosa in that regard and she will need something similar against Kontaveit who will surely try to attack her. They played 5 times so far with Muguruza leading 3-2. The last time they played was two days ago in a crucial match for Muguruza which she won. Kontaveit was safe in that match and her motivation might have not been the same but she will have a chance for revenge in a far more important match.
It will beging at 02:30 CET so be sure to tune in.
