While the WTA Finals is not for a long time in the future, the
WTA Race is still well and truly on. Picking up points throughout the campaign is largely important to secure your spot in the big showpiece event at the end of the year. Take
Mirra Andreeva who missed out by a few points in 2025. It looks like she has learned her lesson with her title heroics the main talking point in the race to Riyadh.
Right at the top,
Aryna Sabalenka is perched comfortably in the lead. She has competed in four tournaments in 2026 and reached the final in all of them. The Sunshine double has put her in a great position to push on in the clay swing with no concern from incoming traffic.
The only person who could knock the world number one off her perch is
Elena Rybakina. Along with Sabalenka, she was one of many top WTA players who did not set foot on court as she ramps up her clay court preparations away from ongoing events. She has another chance to earn some more points in the
Stuttgart Open, an event that Aryna Sabalenka had pulled out of days before it commenced.
Jessica Pegula will also not make the trip to Germany, but is very comfortable in third place thanks to a rapid start to the year. Elina Svitolina and Karolina Muchova did not feature in the WTA Finals last year but are currently sitting in a very respectable fourth and fifth. The plan will be to boost their position in Stuttgart, ahead of the likes of Victoria Mboko just behind in sixth.
Andreeva on the move
The top eight players in the world in terms of points earned on the WTA Tour will be able to compete in the WTA Finals. While Andreeva could be found in eighth before making the trip to Austria, her position is now a lot more solid with a huge points haul, moving her up into seventh.
It is a huge boost for the Russian who had just come off a torrid Sunshine swing in dire need of a decent run. She most certainly did that in the Upper Austria Ladies Linz. The 18-year-old stormed to glory, defeating Anastasia Potapova in the final, and gained 500 points to leapfrog Coco Gauff. Belinda Bencic remains in ninth.
Just four of the current top eight featured in the 2025 WTA Finals, showing that there is work to do for other top players. Amanda Anisimova and Iga Swiatek are notable absentees, sitting in 10th and 12th respectively. Poor starts to the year will force the pair to get a move on in what could be a lucrative period in the calendar. Swiatek will be the number two seed in Stuttgart, hoping to finally get her season started with a bang.
Jelena Ostapenko benefits from a quarterfinal in Linz, shooting up to 14th. Potapova is a huge winner, rising a whopping 32 positions to 30th thanks to the final run on home soil. This even surpasses Jasmine Paolini who is in a spot of bother currently down in 34th.
