The 2026 season is set to go into overdrive. Two consecutive WTA 1000 tournaments is swiftly followed by the second Grand Slam of the year at Roland Garros. The best players in the world have keen ambitions to pick up wins, titles and the points which go with it. These will be added to the WTA Race rankings with eight spots on the line for the WTA Finals in November.
The main event from the prior week was the Stuttgart Open. Not all the big names were in action, but many of them did make the trip to Germany. While some took the opportunity with open arms, others saw a chance go by with the Madrid Open their new priority.

Changing of the guard at the top

There has been change at the top of the table. After not turning up to the Stuttgart Open, Aryna Sabalenka left herself vulnerable from an attack by Elena Rybakina. The Kazakh needed to clinch all 500 points on offer to take the lead in the race to Riyadh, and that is exactly what she did after a successful title win. The reigning WTA Finals champion has enjoyed a fine 2026 campaign, and that looks like it will extend to clay.
There is no trouble for Sabalenka. It is expected that these two will comfortably qualify for the showpiece event at the end of the year. The world number one will look to add some more points to her overall colelction at the Madrid Open where she is the reigning champion.
Behind the top two, Jessica Pegula sits around 1000 points behind. She has not taken to the court in the prior WTA tournaments in Linz or Stuttgart after winning the Charleston Open title. The 2025 semi-finalist in Saudi Arabia has seen her gap ahead of the chasing pack reduced with players capitalising on the opportunity that they got in Stuttgart. Elina Svitolina raced to the semi-finals as her incredible form continued on the big stage. The 2018 champion has not featured since reaching the final in 2019 and will be desperate to make her return.
Her progress in Germany was stunted by a hugely impressive Karolina Muchova. The Czech would lose in the final but the points earned see her cement her position in fifth. Mirra Andreeva reached the semi-final following from her title triumph in Linz and is boosted up a place into sixth ahead of good friend Victoria Mboko. Those three have never competed in the WTA Finals before. They have huge aspirations to break new ground ahead of some experience players.

Chasing pack looking to keep up

Coco Gauff has a lot of points to defend on clay in this period, including the Roland Garros title. This could be motivation and a catalyst to bump herself up a few slots in the WTA Race rankings. She remains in eighth, and quite comfortably after adding some more points to her tally.
The top eight automatically qualify and are the positions that you want to be in. However, it is still early days and there is a lot more tennis to be played with subsequent points there for the taking. Belinda Bencic sits in ninth with Amanda Anisimova completing the top 10.
Iga Swiatek leapt above Iva Jovic into 12th but is uncharacteristically off the pace after a slow start to the year. There is work to be done for the 2023 champion if she is going to qualify for a sixth consecutive year.
A quarterfinal run for Linda Noskova propels her up five spots into 14th, just behind the impressive Sorana Cirstea. Madison Keys loses a place and drops to 16th, looking unlikely that she will return to the WTA Finals. The same could be said for Jasmine Paolini. Languishing down in 35th after a damaging defeat in the first round of Stuttgart. The Rouen Open champion, Marta Kostyuk, was one of the big winners. She rose from 42nd to 22nd after her success.
