The WTA is set to review their sponsorship rules after Veronika Kudermetova played in Madrid with the logo of Russian company which didn't break event rules but created controversy online.
Veronika Kudermetova played at the Madrid Open with the logo of one of her sponsors on her kit. That in itself is nothing strange however there are some things that people online pointed out that ultimately forced the WTA to review their sponsorships rules. The company is an oil company which is directly linked to the war in Ukraine as it supplies the Russian army during the conflict.
Kudermetoav won't be able to sport that logo during Wimbledon as part of their rules but the kit didn't break any rules of the Madrid Open which is how she explained it when asked about it:
“I think for Wimbledon, it’s not allowed to play with the badge from Russia, I know that. For the moment I’m not breaking the rule, if something changes I will do something.”
Due to the uproar on social media because of it, the WTA will now review its rules. She also revealed that she signed the Wimbledon declaration of neutrality explaining that her focus is only on tennis.
