Dayana Yastremska and
Sofia Kenin are out of the
Indian Wells Masters following losses in round one of the event.
Yastremska had a very difficult time last week in Lyon trying to juggle her tennis and emotions as her country was invaded by Russia. Only days before playing in Lyon Yastremska escaped from Odessa into Romania before making her way to France. Despite that, she was able to reach the final and almost win it against Zhang.
All of that gave her confidence but also left her quite drained and it was evident against Garcia. The French player was playing good tennis last week in Lyon as well and today against Yastremska simply had more. When it mattered the most she was physically stronger and prevailed in three sets 6-4 6-7(8) 7-5. A good win for Garcia who is starting to play much better than last year.
Joining Garcia in the 2nd round will be Beatriz Haddad Maia who took down Sofia Kenin with a very good performance. The Brazilian player has been gaining confidence in the past weeks in Mexico and it showed today against Kenin who is playing abysmal tennis. Ever since the pandemic hit, Kenin can't do anything right on the court and it's been loss after loss for the American.
The former Australian Open champion is now 2-6 on the year with her current singles ranking being 130. If she doesn't start winning matches soon she will see her ranking drop even further.
