The victory was her first WTA-level victory in 18 months and it meant a lot to Bouchard who was quite moved by the occasion. It was a solid win over a player that was in better form than her at the moment so it should give her confidence moving forward.
Connors took note of it on social media and responded on Twitter:
"Nice work— Eugenie Bouchard — keep working and grinding— but more important- enjoy the competition— and you are playing the best game ever- have fun !!!!! J"
It's a win that comes after a lengthy battle with injury problems, especially shoulder problems in recent years. Bouchard herself was quite ecstatic after the win saying:
"I’ve just gained so much experience off the court. I’ve been through some really tough moments and it has really tested my patience. It made me realize how much I loved tennis."
"I was exhausted. It’s just that mental focus. To play in a match is different than practice. I've never had to come back from surgery before. I’ve never had such a big injury. For me, it’s really ground zero."
