Former world number one
John McEnroe is hoping to see Emma
Raducanu returning to playing tennis at the highest level.
The 20-year-old won the US Open in 2021 but has not been able
to replicate her performances ever since.
Raducanu did not feature in the French Open earlier this
year and is set to miss
Wimbledon because of ankle and hand injuries.
McEnroe, who is a three-time Wimbledon champion, was quoted
in a report by the newsmedia where he stated that it will be a ‘long road’ back
for the former world number 10.
"Look, she’s won a major which 99 per cent of players
or more can’t say," he said. "But you don’t want to be that one-hit
wonder either. So this is going to be a long road back because she’s had to
start over.”
McEnroe also revealed that he was ‘surprised’ after seeing Raducanu
changing her coaching staff following her triumph in New York two years back.
"When she won the Open. I was surprised that she let go
of her coach right after,” said the 64-year-old. “You don’t change a winning
formula. At least wait a couple of majors. Then if it’s not working, okay,
we’re starting to move on. I’ve never sat and talked with her, so I’m not sure
exactly why these decisions were made.
"But we could see from when she didn’t come out on the
court, a few months earlier at Wimbledon, that she was feeling pressure and
stress. Almost anyone would. And then she handled it incredibly [in New York]. Now
it has been more magnified. So you feel for her. You want her to be able to
enjoy it – the process and the journey that takes place."
