Stan Wawrinka has not had a very good 2021 having struggled with injuries and fatigue issues after contracting COVID.
The 36-year old played only 6 matches in 2021 winning 3 with his last match coming in early march in Doha. Not long after that, it was revealed that Wawrinka has been dealing with a foot issue and some fatigue after a bout with COVID before the season start.
Wawrinka announced in early April:
"Hey guys, I just wanted to update you. After having some problems with my left foot for a while, I have decided to do a small procedure. Everything went well. I will be out for a few weeks but can't wait to start practising again soon."
The 3x Grand Slam winner hoped he would be able to return prior to the Roland Garros in order to play some clay matches to better prepare for it. He first withdrew from Madrid and Rome and did not appear on the entry lists for Lyon or Geneva.
That casted major doubt over his participation at the Roland Garros and an update to the event Entry List confirmed he would not take part in it. Wawrinka has been silent since early May when he posted a photo of himself on a tennis court.
His return is probably expected for the grass swing if he does not experience another setback. We will keep you updated.
