The first day of the second week at the US Open is concluded with the likes of Rafael Nadal and Gael Monfils very much still involved at Flushing Meadows.
Nadal had to dig in for the first time this tournament; to dispel the 2014 champion Marin Cilic in a 6-3, 3-6, 6-1, 6-2 victory and
afterwards, he spoke about how amazing the crowd was in victory.
The three-time champion in this event has made the Quarter-Finals; at least in the last nine Grand Slams and will next take on Diego Schwartzman.
Schwartzman finally ended the run of Alexander Zverev coming through the tie; after losing the first set to the German. He finally lost his record of not losing a set during this year's tournament; but accounted for that with a brilliant win.
It ties his biggest win of his career by ATP Ranking which is no.6 as a result; after a gruelling three hours and eight minutes on court. Zverev struggled at times; in terms of double faults with 17 and was never able to really match the rallies of the Argentine ace.
This showed with Schwartzman winning rallies that lasted longer than four shots by 73-56; as he capped off a brilliant performance despite the test that will come next.
Gael Monfils like alluded to also moved through and he looked superb in doing so easing past Pablo Andujar 6-1, 6-2, 6-2 in just under an hour and a half. A near complete performance which given his injury troubles is surprising; but it is his ninth Grand Slam Quarter-Final.
He didn't really face a challenge from the Spaniard and he hit six out of 10 break points and never faced a break point on his serve. Alongside that he hit 34 winners and won 81 per cent of his second serve.
His partner, Elina Svitolina is also enduring a brilliant run at Flushing Meadows and the couple known as G.E.M.S will hope they are both in the Winners Circle come the end of the week.
Next up is Matteo Berrettini for a place in the US Open Semi-Finals after another brilliant performance from the Italian who edged past Andrey Rublev 6-1, 6-4, 7-6.
