The inaugural Cordoba Open took place in February 2019, replacing the canceled ATP 250 event in Quito that left the Tour after lack of financial support.
The Lawn Tenis Club Cordoba hosted the first ATP tournament on clay in 2019, gathering an excellent field led by Fabio Fognini, Marco Cecchinato, Diego Schwartzman and Pablo Carreno Busta. World no. 112 Juan Ignacio Londero ousted Guido Pella in three sets to claim the first ATP title and become the inaugural champion.
A year ago, Cristian Garin toppled Diego Schwartzman to lift the trophy, and the Chilean will not be in Cordoba to defend the title, experiencing injury and withdrawing from the Australian Open.
This year's edition takes place right after the Australian Open, offering the clay-courters a chance to compete on their favorite surface for the first time this year. The home star Diego Schwartzman is the first seed and the top favorite, seeking the title in front of the home fans and facing Benoit Paire, Miomir Kecmanovic and the former finalist Guido Pella as his main rivals.
Albert Ramos-Vinolas, Dominik Koepfer and Pablo Andujar should also be in contention if they produce their best tennis, with Juan Ignacio Londero hoping for another deep run just like two years ago.
