The
schedule has been confirmed ahead of Friday at the 2024
Monte-Carlo Masters.
Novak Djokovic against
Alex De Minaur and
Jannik Sinner – Holger Rune will
be the main spectacles of the quarterfinals, where the last four competitors
for the title will be determined.
Djokovic
and Sinner advance smoothly
The Serbian
returns to the quarterfinals of Monte-Carlo for the first time since 2019. The
world No. 1 and 2-time champion has found it difficult in recent years to reach
a high level in the first clay Masters 1000, but he managed to reach the
quarterfinals without difficulty by defeating
Lorenzo Musetti (7-5, 6-3) and
avenged his elimination in 2023 against the Italian. His next challenge is
against Alex De Minaur, who eliminated Alexei Popyrin and the 2023 champion
Andrey Rublev.
The world
No. 2 Jannik Sinner has also demonstrated this week that he is a dangerous
player on clay. He secured a straightforward victory against the German
Jan-Lennard Struff and returns to the quarterfinals. This time the challenge
will be tough against the 2023 finalist Holger Rune, who defeated the 9th
seed Dimitrov in an epic encounter that was decided in the third-set tie-break.
Sinner will play against Holger Rune
Tsitsipas
– Khachanov and Ruud – Humbert also headline Friday
In one of
the most anticipated matches on Thursday,
Stefanos Tsitsipas defeated Alexander
Zverev (7-5, 6-3) and extended his head-to-head lead to 10-5. The Greek,
champion of Monte-Carlo in 2021 and 2022, advances to the quarterfinals once
again and will face
Karen Khachanov. The Russian overcame his compatriot Daniil
Medvedev (6-3, 7-5) and reached the quarterfinals in Monte-Carlo for the first
time in his career, and only the second time in a clay Masters 1000.
The other
matchup will feature
Casper Ruud, who ended
Hubert Hurkacz's streak of 6
consecutive wins on clay and will now face the 14th seed Ugo Humbert who came from a set down to defeat lucky loser
Lorenzo Sonego.
