With Day One complete at least in terms of the outer courts, the schedule has been confirmed for Day Two (Sunday 28 July) at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games Tennis with Rafael Nadal, Coco Gauff, Alexander Zverev and Andy Murray all in action. Our preview looks ahead to proceedings at Roland Garros.
As well as that there are as many as six matches on each court. With the outside courts being a wash-out, many first round ties will only be played on Sunday meaning a long day awaits with a better weather forecast.

Nadal, Gauff and Zverev headline Court Philippe-Chatrier

On the main show courts, there are four matches on Court Philippe-Chatrier with a triad of big names all starting their campaigns. Rafael Nadal seems to have made the decision to play singles with a match against Novak Djokovic potentially next up. He faces Marton Fucsovics who he ironically could also play in the doubles after the first notching of Nadalcaraz provided glory.
They are second up on Chatrier, a court that Nadal knows and loves. The same can be said for a former champion opening the show in Barbora Krejcikova. Now a double Grand Slam champion, she plays for the first time since Wimbledon and is a former Roland Garros winner. She faces Sara Sorribes Tormo.
But also on the main court is Coco Gauff who has an open quarter of sorts with Maria Sakkari who opens Suzanne-Lenglen the leading threat. It is Gauff who takes on Ajla Tomljanovic, a close friend of Maria Sakkari so a glimpse into the future perhaps. Then it is the reigning Olympic gold medalist as Alexander Zverev returns to defend his gold as he faces Jaume Munar. A spate of Spaniards on the lead court but one man will steal the show on Day Two.

Sakkari, Ruud, Pegula, Musetti and Murray farewell set for Lenglen

But amid the top singles stars, it has to be said that Andy Murray's farewell perhaps is an undercurrent during Day Two. He plays last up on Suzanne-Lenglen as he makes his final professional bow potentially. He teams with Dan Evans in men's doubles.
Facing off against Taro Daniel and Kei Nishikori, it is two singles stars on each team but given their experience together, it perhaps favours the Brits with Murray's last chance for a medal coming here. But before that is four top singles stars starting their quest.
Andy Murray's farewell is upon us potentially on Sunday.

It all begins like alluded to with Maria Sakkari, the seventh seed facing Danka Kovinic. Casper Ruud, a two-time Roland Garros finalist opens up against Taro Daniel. Jessica Pegula takes on Viktorija Golubic and finally Lorenzo Musetti in one of the games of the day faces Gael Monfils. True spectacle tennis on Suzanne-Lenglen and the court to watch.

Collins, Tsitsipas, Muchova-Fernandez, Wozniacki and Andreescu elsewhere

With the delayed Day One, it is stacked with ties and so many that will likely get missed off this preview. Danielle Collins and Stefanos Tsitsipas facing Laura Siegemund and Zizou Bergs respectively will return to attempt to play again.
Caroline Wozniacki makes her Olympic return to face Mayar Sherif. Leylah Fernandez and Karolina Muchova play more than one game on Sunday in both singles and doubles but will face each other in a delayed game.
Arthur Fils and Matteo Arnaldi contest one of the ties of the round in the men's. While Bianca Andreescu, Emma Navarro, Jack Draper all finally begin their campaigns. There is also Mirra Andreeva after her mad dash from Iasi facing another player who was stuck in Prague in Magda Linette. Two players with golden weeks but perhaps not the best journeys here. Both will be grateful for a later start going late on Sunday evening.
In a battle of late arrivals, Iasi winner faces Prague winner in Andreeva v Linette.

Early Years and Initial Inclusion

  • 1896 Athens Olympics: Tennis was one of the original sports included in the first modern Olympic Games. Both men's singles and doubles events were featured.
  • 1900 Paris Olympics: Women's tennis was introduced, with Charlotte Cooper of Great Britain becoming the first female Olympic champion in history.

Interruption and Absence

  • 1924 Paris Olympics: Tennis was featured for the last time before a long hiatus. It was dropped from the Olympic program due to disputes over amateurism rules and other administrative issues.

Reinstatement and Modern Era

  • 1988 Seoul Olympics: After a 64-year absence, tennis was reintroduced as a full medal sport. This reinstatement marked the beginning of the modern era of Olympic tennis. Steffi Graf of Germany won the women's singles gold, achieving a "Golden Slam" by winning all four Grand Slam titles and the Olympic gold in the same year.
  • 2000 Sydney Olympics: Venus Williams of the United States won both the women's singles and doubles gold medals, with the doubles victory achieved alongside her sister Serena Williams.

Recent Developments

  • 2004 Athens to 2016 Rio Olympics: The period saw champions from diverse nations, including Justine Henin (Belgium), Elena Dementieva (Russia), and Andy Murray (Great Britain), who became the first player to win two consecutive singles gold medals (2012 and 2016).
  • 2020 Tokyo Olympics: Novak Djokovic, despite being a favorite, was upset in the semi-finals. Alexander Zverev of Germany won the men's singles gold, while Belinda Bencic of Switzerland won the women's singles gold.

Notable Achievements

  • Williams Sisters: Serena and Venus Williams have been particularly successful, winning multiple gold medals in both singles and doubles, solidifying their legacy in Olympic tennis history.
  • Steffi Graf: Her "Golden Slam" in 1988 remains one of the most remarkable achievements in the history of the sport.
